TWO CREWS TOP STANNIC RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS TABLE
Two crews expected to be at the forefront of the points race throughout the year, are at the top of the early season Stannic Rally Championship points table.
A win and a second apiece sees Castrol Toyota Conquest factory pair Serge Damseaux and Guy Hodgson and Jan Habig and Douglas Judd, in the works VW Golf 4, sharing the lead after the Stannic Tour Natal and the recent Stannic Cape Rally. Both crews have 61 points to move 15 clear of reigning Class A6 champions Hergen Fekken and Dave Lewkowicz in the Dunair Toyota Conquest.
Fekken and Lewkowicz are followed by KwaZulu Natal crew Etienne Lourens and Robert Paisley, in the Team Total Toyota Conquest and Class A7 leaders Barry Grobbelaar and Mike Burrows in the Team Total VW Golf. A good showing on the Stannic Cape Rally, where they finished third, has lifted Sasol Motorcraft Ford Escort pair Paolo Piazza-Musso and Richard Leeke into fifth place.
On the Group N front the championship for standard cars is dominated by Toyota crews. Dean Sanders and Graham Hooper (Team Total Toyota Corolla) top the standings and are closely followed by Kobus Roos/Neil Fourie (Toyota Corolla) and Rodney Visagie/Caroline Cimma in a Team Total Toyota Tazz.
Cape crew Diffie Marais and Danie de Waal (Toyota Corolla) share fourth place with Mike Houghton and Bryn Doherty (Toyota Tazz), with Cliff Blackman/Johan Klaasen (Team Total Nissan Sentra) completing the top five. Only seven points separate Sanders/Hooper and Blackman/Klaasen.
Damseaux/Hodgson and Habig/Judd lead Class A8 ahead of Lourens and Paisley, while Class A7 is led by Grobbelaar and Burrows ahead of Hannes Grobler and Nic Hadden (Total Bridgestone Nissan Sentra) and the consistent Gys Kleny/Johan Barnard in a Team Total VW Golf. Fekken and Lewkowicz top the Class A6 standings ahead of Western Cape crew Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Pierre Arries.
Blackman/Klaasen have a healthy lead in Class N3 but only three points separate Sanders/Hooper and Roos/ Fourie in Class N2. It is also tight in Class N1 with just two points difference between Visagie/Cimma and the Houghton/Doherty combination.
In the prestige manufacturers championship solid performances throughout the various classes on the Stannic Tour Natal and the Stannic Cape Rally have seen Toyota move into a commanding early lead. Toyota already have a 183 point cushion over Volkswagen who once again will fight it out for the title.
