DAMSEAUX FIRST ON THE ROAD ON STANNIC CAPE RALLY

The Castrol Toyota pair of Serge Damseaux and Guy Hodgson will be first car on the road for the Stannic Cape Rally, round two of the Stannic Rally Championship, in the Western Cape on April 16 and 17.

Seven time South African drivers champion Damseaux and Hodgson will start ahead of 1997 champions Jannie Habig and Douglas Judd in the factory VW Golf when the event gets underway at the Killarney racing circuit on April 16. The Toyota crew last month won the opening event of the season, the Stannic Tour Natal in KwaZulu Natal, and on home territory will be heavily favoured for a second victory.

Third on the road will be the Sasol Motorcraft Ford Escort of Paolo Piazza-Musso and Richard Leeke, who will be followed by KwaZulu Natal crew Etienne Lourens and Robert Paisley in the Team Total Toyota Conquest. Reigning Class A6 champions Hergen Fekken and Dave Lewkowicz, in the Dunair Toyota Conquest, complete the top five and start ahead of Class A7 champions Tjaart van der Walt and Cindi Harding in the Rieks 7 Eleven VW Golf.

Jean-Pierre Damseaux, son of Serge, and Pierre Arries in another Team Total Toyota Conquest running in Class A6, will be seventh on the road and start ahead of reigning Group N drivers champion Hannes Grobler in the Total Bridgestone Nissan Sentra. The Nissan is the only Group N entry in the top 10 of the draw, and Grobler will be partnered by Cape navigator Nic Hadden who last year sat alongside Piazza-Musso.

Anoher KwaZulu Natal crew, Tony Ball and Marti Olivier, in the Bulwer Park V W Golf, will be ninth on the road. Behind them and completing the top 10 will be Pretoria crew Barry Grobbelaar and Mike Burrows, in the Team Total VW Golf, with the pair looking for back to back wins in Class A7.

In an interesting development another Pretoria pairing, Callie van der Merwe and Andre Vermeulen, also join the Class A7 fray in a VW Golf. Van der Merwe and Vermeulen previously campaigned - and won their class on the Stannic Tour Natal - in an ageing but spectacular rearwheel drive Nissan Skyline in Class S20 which does not score towards the Stannic Rally Championship.

With the Stannic Cape Rally counting towards both the Stannic Rally Championship and the Stannic Western Cape Rally Championship, the event has drawn an entry of 53 cars. Of these 47 cars will score points towards both the national and Western Cape championships.

The first 10 in the draw are:

1 S Damseaux/G Hodgson (Castrol Toyota Conquest); 2 J Habig/D Judd (VW Golf 4); 3 P Piazza-Musso/R Leeke (Sasol Motorcraft Ford Escort); 4 E Lourens/R Paisley (Team Total Toyota Conquest); 5 D H Fekken/Lewkowicz (Dunair Toyota Conquest); 6 T van der Walt/C Harding (Rieks 7 Eleven VW Golf); 7 J-P Damseaux/P Arries (Team Total Toyota Conquest); 8 H Grobler/N Hadden (Total Bridgestone Nissan Sentra); 9 T Ball/M Olivier (Bulwer Park VW Golf); 10 B Grobbelaar/M Burrows (Team Total VW Golf).
