The Sun City 400, long known for the international participation of world famous names such as Malcolm Smith of 'On any Sunday' fame, Indy Car and NASCAR star Robby Gordon and American off road racer Roger Mears Jr., will again have a foreign competitor on the start line.
Belgian aristocrat Gregoire de Mevius, who is the two times FIA World Group N Rally Champion and the leading light in the New Dimension X-raid BMW team that made its debut on Dakar 2003, will make his first appearance in South Africa in the Audi V8 powered Adrenalise Corporate Entertainment BAT.
BAT Racing was recently commissioned by de Mevius to build two BAT vehicles with fully enclosed bodywork in which he plans to contest the 2004 FIA Baja Trophy and has entered the event to gain vital Special Vehicle driving experience in preparation for his 2004 campaign.
De Mevius was hugely complimentary of the BAT Racing set-up headed up by Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400 winner Brandon Harcus.
"The design, technology and build quality of the BAT vehicles is on a par with the best available in the USA and Europe and I had no hesitation in signing a long-term deal with Brandon Harcus," said de Mevius. "BAT vehicles have won two races this year and based on their current form they are the ones to beat at Sun City."
"I look forward to experiencing South African off road racing and, who knows, I could just pull off a win for BAT," added the Belgian.
A buoyant but cautious Harcus who, with Gary Bertholdt, won the Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400, is quietly confident of the teams' potential success on the Sun City 400.
"Apart from the de Mevius and Andrew van Zyl entry we have another six BAT vehicles entered in Class A and Class B," said Harcus. "Nissan Sugarbelt 400 winners Gerald Mundell / Billy Bond (Prolong BAT), Danie Marais / Andrew Utterson (Intelegence BAT), Mark Corbett / Jason Bruwer (Century Property Developments BAT) and Gary and I are more than ready to take on the American Jimco and Chenowth brigade that has dominated the South African off road scene for so many years."
"Class B has also become a BAT stamping ground with KwaZulu Natal crew Clint Gibson and Mike Brown (Praesidium Financial Services BAT) who have had back-to-back class wins and Ernst Corbett and Warwick Goosen (Century Property Developments BAT) proudly flying the BAT flag."
It is only a matter of time before a BAT joins the Proudly South African Nissan team in taking on and beating the worlds' best on the legendary Dakar.
