After three rounds of the eight-event 2001 South African Off-Road Car Championship, the father and son pairing of Franz Czepek senior and junior have stamped an early authority on the Special Vehicle category while Shumie van Vuuren leads what promises to be a closely contested Production Vehicle category.
The Czepeks haven't put a wheel wrong in their class A Vee Motors Chenowth in their quest for their fifth national title, winning all three events held so far. They have 105 points and a handy 31-point lead over reigning class B champion Giel Nel in his single seater Luk Africa Truggy.
Nel, who leads class B by 28 points from Gavan Gray and former national Special Vehicle champion Richard Schilling (Plastotech Raceco), is 12 points ahead of overall third-placed Greg Harvey in his Queen Motor Spares Jimco.
Boy Stone, who occupies the hot seat in Harvey's Jimco, is second in the co-drivers' championship with 62 points. Third is Geoff Minnitt on 55 points. Evan Hutchison is fourth on 46 points with Ashley Thorne, Schilling's co-driver, fifth on 33 points.
Minnitt co-drives the Kopanong Jimco of John Weir-Smith, who is fourth in the Special Vehicle drivers' championship. Hutchison shares the Hellman Worldwide Jimco with Atang Makgekgenene, who is fifth in the overall standings and fourth in class A.
Reigning Special Vehicle drivers' champion Shameer Variawa has only made two appearances so far this year, sharing his Cornbake Racing Jimco with Zaheer Bodhanya on the Mitsubishi Barberspan 500 and the Nissan Sugarbelt 400, and failed to finish in both events. Reigning co-drivers' champion Buks Carolin, the only off-road racer who has won both the Special Vehicle drivers' and co-drivers' championships, is driving the works class T Mitsubishi Pajero in the Production Vehicle category this year after co-driving for Variawa last year.
