Vilagama 400 off-road: Three Shimwells Yamaha riders in Top Five
Shimwells Yamaha single-handedly saw to it that Yamaha received the Manufacturer's Award at the recent Vilagama 400 off-road after they won the event overall and three of their riders finished in the top five while they also won the Open Class, the 250cc Class and the 200cc Class.
Gray Dick scored his third victory of the season when he won the Vilagama 400, the seventh round of the National Off-road Championship held in the Naboomspruit area this weekend, overall while he also claimed the Open Class victory. He started the race in the second position, but took the lead from Spencer Kriel before the halfway mark and kept it to the finish.
His team-mate and the defending off-road champion, Jade Gutzeit, fought his way from the 15th place on the starting grid through the field to the third place on the overall podium. Other than to chase and overtake riders in the dust, Gutzeit - like Dick - had a trouble-free run and scored his fourth 250cc Class victory of the season.
Gavin Louw, participating with the 250cc four-stroke Shimwells Yamaha in the 200cc Class, put up one of the best performances of his racing career when he came home in the fifth place overall while he also scored his third 200cc Class victory of the season.
Gutzeit has now moved into the lead in the 250cc Class Championship while he kept his third place on the overall standings while Louw kept his lead in the 200cc Class Championship. Dick is still second behind Darryl Curtis (who finished second overall) in both the Open Class and the overall championship.
With only one race to go in the 2004 National Off-road Championship, Dick and Gutzeit are quite secure of their second and third places in the overall championship and the worst that can happen, is that they can swop places after the Vodacom Lesotho Sun Roof of Africa that will take place from 25 to 27 November 2004.
