Even since he sat on a ditch watching the Donegal International Rally six years ago, Shaun Gallagher’s sporting life has changed completely. The young Letterkenny man was immediately‘ bitten by the bug’ and as the saying goes–‘ never looked back.’ In fact, Shaun’s rapid progress in rallying has elevated him among Ireland’s stars of the future. And if all goes according to plan, Shaun ambitions to secure a Works-drive in the World Rally Championship will have become a reality.

What Shaun has in his favour is time. At only 21, the next two years will have a major bearing in making the right moves in that direction.

At present, he competes in the Peugeot Super 106 Cup in the U.K. as well as selected events in Ireland. By finishing inside the Top 10 in the most successful one-make rally series together with Class honours in Irish events - should be enough to put Shaun up there among the finalists for the prestigious Billy Coleman Award 2002.

Named after rally legend, Billy Coleman, the award was initiated by Mayo & District Motorsport Club to nurture up and coming young Irish drivers. Supported by Sport Ireland and Rally Clubs around the country, the Billy Coleman Award consists of a £20,000 prize fund backed up by training programmes to pave the way for young drivers to use as a spring board to rally stardom and onwards to the World Rally Championship.

Experience gained in the Peugeot Super 106 Cup Series has been put to good use particularly in events over here. Second and third place finishes in Connaught Motor Club’s gravel Autocrosses in Ballisodare, Sligo during the summer endorsed his competence over the‘ loose’. While 2nd in Class secured in the Birr and Mayo Single Stage Rallies proved his worth over the‘ black stuff’.

Just as Rory Galligan (the present Billy Coleman Award winner) the newly crowned TOTAL Peugeot Super 106 Cup Champion was noticed by rally followers as one of the sports brightest stars, Shaun Gallagher has now received the same recognition. Remember the name– It’s going to go far ............ and fast!
