Changes to Bankfin Off-Road Championship regulations.
A number of technical changes and dispensations will come into immediate effect in the Bankfin Off-Road Championship.
According to a Motorsport South Africa Off-Road Car Racing Commission bulletin issued by Motorsport South Africa, immediate changes come into effect prior to the Toyota 1000 Desert Race, the third round of the series, from June 21 to 23. At the same time other changes will come into force with effect from the O'Hagan's / Kopanong Hotel 500 on July 26 and 27.
One of the immediate changes affects Class A in the Special Vehicle category. Production based off-road vehicles will not be allowed to compete in Class A if bodywork resembles that of a production road going vehicle.
The bulletin adds that a number of vehicles competing in Class B in the Special Vehicle category are, in terms of General Competition Rule 226, considered to be illegal. For the remainder of the 2002 season, however, the controllers have decided to allow certain dispensations.
While engines must not exceed 2050 cm3 in capacity and must retain the original cylinder block, head, crankshaft and connecting rods from series production car or commercial vehicles, modifications are now free. The fitting of superchargers or turbochargers, however, will not be allowed.
The bulletin adds that the controllers reserve the right to revert to standard 2050 cm3 or standard engines of smaller capacity for the 2003 season.
Technical changes in Classes T and D of the Production Vehicle category will come into effect from the O'Hagan's / Kopanong Hotel 500. The most of important of these are new sizes of induction air restrictors.
Class T will be restricted to 40 millimetres and Class D to 32 millimetres. Minimum vehicle masses specified in a circular issued to competitors earlier in the season will also come into effect.
