L'Estage and Mitsubishi win Rocky Mountain Rally
Calgary, May 31, 2010 - The second round of the Canadian Rally Championship was held this weekend in atrocious weather conditions in Alberta with the 37th running of the Rocky Mountain Rally. Antoine L'Estage, codriven by Nathalie Richard in their 2009 Evolution, ran flawless against the elements and took an outright victory for Mitsubishi. Organizers had to shuffle the stage roads when almost a foot of snow covered the Porcupine Hills region south of Calgary. The 30 teams entered had to drive in a mixture of melting snow and mud. L'Estage took an early lead and was never denied victory, earning best times over most of the speed stages and winning with a comfortable two-minute lead over second place Patrick Richard and Alan Ockwell in a Subaru WRX STi. Leading the Rally America and North American series, L'Estage is now charging back in the standings in the Canadian Championship.
Two more Mitsubishi teams clinched a birth in the Top 10. Simon Losier and Philippe Poirier steered their Synchro Racing EVO 8 RS to a deserving seventh place while Ian Crerar and Ray Felice completed in 10th with an EVO 6. Canadian defending champions in the two-wheel drive class, Jan and Jody Zedril from Winnipeg had their hands full in these conditions but talent prevailed and they scored another class win. Albertans Zbigniew Szewczyk and Tomasz Karzynski were also heading for a Top 10 finish but experienced mechanical problems.
"The Mitsubishi Brigade was very deserving this weekend in terrible race conditions," said Koji Soga, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc.(MMSCAN). "This could be the turning point of the season that could be echoed with other championships in November."
Baie des Chaleurs, next event in July
The third event of the season, Rallye Baie des Chaleurs will take place in the Gaspe Peninsula on July 2 - 3 around the city of New Richmond. The Baie is also run over two days and attended by large crowds.
