RIDE WITH DOOHAN & BROCK ON TARGA & PACIFIC ACCESS WEBSITES
THURSDAY, APRIL 12: Internet users can chart the progress of Michael Doohan, Peter Brock and other high-profile drivers in this month's 10th anniversary Targa Tasmania tarmac rally through the latest in online vehicle tracking units.
The in-car tracking system has been organised by Pacific Access Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Telstra Corporation Limited, through its location and navigation brand, Whereis™.
Doohan, a five-times 500cc motorcycle world champion, will have one of the tracking units in the Mercedes-Benz CLK 55 AMG in which he will make his car-racing debut, as will multiple Bathurst 1000 winner Brock in his V8 Holden Ute.
The tracking system will be available on both the official event website (www.targa.org.au) and the Pacific Access location and navigation website (www.whereis.com.au) throughout the rally from April 18-24.
Other vehicles carrying the tracking units include the turbo Porsche 911 driven by 2000 Targa winner, Jim Richards, the Mercedes-Benz ML 55 AMG of dual 500cc motorcycle world champion Barry Sheene, and the Mazda RX-7 of Channel 9's 'Sale of the Century' television host, Glenn Ridge.
Pacific Access General Manager, Strategy & Development, Greg Ellis said online users would be able to locate the positions of the vehicles with the in-car tracking units either individually or as a group.
"We view these tracking units as an excellent way to showcase our technology resources and enable motorsport fans and enthusiasts to follow some of the biggest names in Targa," said Ellis.
Ellis said the Oztrack units would relay the position of the participating drivers via the mobile phone network and display it on a Whereis™ map every two minutes.
Pacific Access is also a major sponsor of Targa through its popular Yellow Pages® directory.
The owner and producer of the event, global sports marketing company Octagon Worldwide initiated this project to promote Targa Tasmania to motor sports fans and enhance the profile of the rally.
This year's Targa rally has attracted more than 280 entries, and comprises a total distance of 2,110km, with 525km in competitive stages.
The event begins on April 18 with a touring stage from Launceston's Country Country Club Casino, starting at 9.30am, followed by the Temco Prologue at George Town at 12-noon.
