Bourne Takes Heat 2 At Rally Queensland
Reigning Australian Rally Champion Possum Bourne (Subaru Impreza) has maintained his lead in the 1999 series with an inspired drive to win Heat Two of the Falken Tyres Rally Queensland.
Bourne trailed day one leader Neal Bates (Toyota Corolla) with just two stages to go in the second round of the Australian Rally Championship but took 14 seconds off the title hopeful in the run to the line.
The two had been within seconds of each other on the first four stages of the day in wet conditions which have prevailed all weekend.
The second wet ARC event of the year provided the Toyota and Subaru teams with major challenges in selecting the right set-up and tyres for their high tech world rally cars.
"We worked on the car over the weekend looking for more mechanical grip off the back end especially and we achieved that at the service before the last three stages," Bourne said.
Bates had no answer to the Subaru driver's late attack. "Basically Possum just went quicker in the last few stages and did a better job in the muddy conditions. I tried my absolute best," Bates said.
With a heat win each on the Sunshine Coast both drivers scored equal Championship points this weekend. Bourne's first place in round one at Coffs Harbour gives him a four point margin over Bates in the race for the national title.
Cody Crocker (Subaru Impreza) held off a surprising challenge from privateer David Hills (Mitsubishi Lancer) to win the production class and maintain his position at the head of the class table.
In Formula 2 Simon Evans (Volkswagen Golf) repeated his heat one win to score a rare double act in the class.
Teams will now prepare for round three of the Australian Rally Championship in Perth June 25 and 26.
