Kiwi multiple Aussie Champion and former Asia Pacific Champion Possum Bourne and codriver Mark Stacey won their second consecutive event together when they won the FAI Rally of Canberra today. The Impreza WRC98 had no problems, the biggest problem all day was the sun in the eyes as most of the stages were held along ridge lines in the hills surrounding the National Capital. The second run proved to be easier, with the sun higher in the skies Possum extended his lead over Japanese driver Katsu Taguchi and Scottish codriver Derek Ringer.

Taguchi and Ringer started the day over three minutes behind Bourne and Stacey, and they ran into trouble almost right away. They had the rear wing jump off it's mountings, and Katsu had trouble with the sun. "There is lot's of water on the road, and sun is very bad," remarked the Japanese driver.
