The Production Vehicle category belongs for the moment to semi-privateer Shumie van Vuuren in his Castrol Toyota Land Cruiser. Three class D wins and some high overall placings have seen him consolidate his position at the top of the points table with a score of 95.
Closing in on him is second-placed Hannes Grobler after an overall win in the class T works Nissan Hardbody Double Cab in the Mitsubishi Barberspan 500 and a third in the recent Nissan Sugarbelt 400. The former national rally and off-road champion has 88 points, five more than Carolin in the Paris Dakar specced works Mitsubishi Pajero.
Fourth overall and second in class D of the Production Vehicle category is Piet Haasbroek in his Castrol Toyota Land Cruiser with 66 points. Fifth overall and third in class T, four points behind Haasbroek, is multiple SA touring car champion Giniel de Villiers after his maiden off-road win in the second works Nissan Hardbody Double Cab in the Nissan Sugarbelt 400.
Surprise class E leader is Coetzee Labuschagne in his Raysonic Toyota Hilux after a win in the Mitsubishi Barberspan 500 and a second in the Nissan Sugarbelt 400. He has 56 points and is just four ahead of reigning champions Andrew and Chris Birkin in their Castrol Toyota Hilux. The Birkin brothers made a good start to the season in the GC Grobler Group Lichtenburg 400, winning the class. They were second in the Mitsubishi Barberspan 500 and failed to finish the Nissan Sugarbelt 400.
Former national rally and off-road champion Richard Leeke leads the Production Vehicle co-drivers' championship thanks to his successful teaming with Hannes Grobler in the works Nissan Hardbody Super Truck. He has 88 points and a modest five-point lead over Hennie ter Stege, Carolin's co-driver in the works Mitsubishi Pajero.
Third with 66 points is Christo Bosch, who co-drives Piet Haasbroek's Castrol Toyota Land Cruiser. Fanie Kotze, Shumie van Vuuren's co-driver in the Lichtenburg and the Sugarbelt rounds, is fourth with 63 points. Francois Jordaan, Giniel de Villiers' co driver, who is fifth and just one point behind Kotze.
Reigning Production Vehicle champions Neil Woolridge and Kenny Skjoldhammer scored their first points this year on the Nissan Sugarbelt 400, after finishing second in class T in their new Ford Ranger Super truck. They have 31 points and are currently 14th (Woolridge) and 15th (Skjoldhammer) in their respective championships.
