Off road racing is a family affair and this weekend's (May 11 and 12) Nissan Sugarbelt 400 is a good example of this, with no less than 17 family pairings among the 85-plus entries for round three of the 2001 MSA Off Road Car Championship.
Most prominent perhaps is the father and son pair of Franz Czepek senior and junior, who are currently leading the Special Vehicle Championship in their Vee Motors Chenowth after wins in the first two rounds of the championship. They have won four national championships together, in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Other father and son combinations are Production Vehicle competitors Arthur and Scott Abraham (Class T Vacation Vans Jeep Cherokee) and Mark and Stuart Moffat (Class D Land Rover) and Special Vehicle teams David and Warren Confait (Class B Haycroft Earthmovers Orco), Fred and Terence Bailie (Class C Special) and Nick and Ryan Harper (Class A Raceco).
There are five brother combinations: three in the Production Vehicle category are Andrew and Chris Birkin (Castrol Toyota Hilux), who are the current Class E championship leaders, Henri and Maurice Zermatten (Class D Sony Playstation Mitsubishi Pajero) and Jurie and Andre du Plessis (Class D BB Auto Nissan Hardbody), and two in the Special Vehicle category are Mark and Peter Breckle (Class A Brasco Refrigeration Raceco) and Northwest diamond diggers Laurence and Gerhard du Plessis (Class A Chenowth).
Like car rallying, off-road car racing attracts its share of the fairer sex. Husband and wife combinations on the Nissan Sugarbelt 400 include Gerhard and Zelda Niemand (Class B Promotorsport Sandmaster), Vince and Louise Trethewey (Class B Green Mamba), Johan and Frieda van Jaarsveld (Class B Ysco), Andrew and Janet Fulton (Class B Sandmaster), Neels and Zelda van der Walt (Class D Renault Trucks Nissan Hardbody) and Marius and Tracey van Vuuren (Class D Land Rover).
