Brilliant drive takes Andreas Peratikos to victory in the Troodos Rally
Andreas Peratikos produced a brilliant drive to take his Mitsubishi Lancer to victory in the Troodos Rally in Cyprus, in the , Just 14 of the 39 starters in the rally, considered as one of the most challenging in the Championship made it back to the Nicosia finish..
The first four cars to finish were all competing in Group N, for vehicles without major modifications, and the first three home were Mitsubishi Lancers.
For Peratikos, with his co-driver Charis Episkopou it was a sweet moment as he claimed his first victory in an international event after a decade of attempting to win an international rally.
The rally held a series of dramatic moments for him. He slipped into the second place yesterday morning, and when the early race leader Andreas Tsouloftas, the current Cyprus champion, crashed off the road in Special Stage 4 in his Mitsubishi Lancer, Peratikos moved into the lead. Tsouloftas, who was expected to win at this point in the rally, had slithered down a bank, and was unable to get his car back up and into the contest.
Behind the leader Charalambous Timotheou, also in a Mitsubishi Lancer was threatening Peratikos until his gearbox gave up on him after SS 6.
Then Costas Loizides, in Mitsubishi Lancer III grabbed the number two spot, which he held onto until the finish.
Peratikos held his number one place from there until the end of the rally, close to the Venetian walls in the centre of Nicosia, capital of the island. He finished 5 minutes 21 seconds in front of Loizides. In third place was Rami Shohatovich, the leading israeli rally driver, in a mitsubishi lancer evo-5 , a further 2 minutes 14 seconds adrift of Loizides.
The last special stage had to be cancelled as a precautionary measure by the organisers because military vehicles from an annual military exercise, which had already finished, were still on the road at Stavrovouni.
Thirty nine entrants had started out in the rally, and tackled the gruelling course of 235 kilometres of special stages, taking them over two days through four sections forming loops in the mountains which dominate the centre of the island.
A shock before the start of the rally, which is organised by the Cyprus Automobile Association, came when Yiannis Papademetriou, from Greece, who had completed scrutineering with his Subaru Ipreza, failed to turn up to take off in the number one position.
Papademetriou, who had flown in with his service team and brought British co-driver Allan Harryman, had discovered overnight that his gearbox needed changing, but his team were unable to complete the work and he was scratched from the field. Prizegiving for the Troodos Rally will take place tonight in the Cleopatra Hotel, Nicosia, which has been the HQ for the rally. <pre> Final Results Position Crew Car Time 1 A. Peratikos ^Ö C.
