KUMHO Clubman Rally Championship leader James Potter has had a close shave with a difference this week, as he proudly announced a new sponsor in the shape of mens grooming experts, "King of Shaves".
The Kent based driver has been consistently at the front of the field during the championship, winning the opening round of the series with a fine performance in the Yorkshire forests on the Kall Kwik Rally. Potter recently took the maximum points score on the Swansea Bay Clubmans Rally, just missing out on the overall Clubman Rally win by the margin of just 0.3 of second!
Potter's impressive form this year has earned him the backing of the shaving experts for the remainder of the season. King of Shaves (started by company founder Will King) already sponsor a successful British Powerboat Racing team, who have recently won their class in the British Offshore Championship. James intends to make it title number two for the company in 2003 as he holds a strong championship lead with two rounds remaining.
Spectators will also be able to get samples of the King of Shaves products through James's team on the forthcoming Park Systems Rally in Scotland. Potter will once again be campaigning his trusty Ford Escort RS on the event. The former David Sutton and Mick Jones car was originally built to the same specification as the RS1800 car of Finnish World Rally Championship legend Ari Vatanen.
Potter is now rebuilding the car to is original specification piece by piece. A ZF gearbox, AP brakes all round and a fully floating Atlas axle have all been fitted to the car. The only non original piece of running gear is the normally aspirated Cosworth engine, although James hopes to fit an original BDG type Ford engine to the car in the future.
For now, James has to concentrate on putting in another strong performance on the next round of the KUMHO Clubmans Rally Championship. Potter's recent form suggests that another close shave may be in order by the end of the one day event in the forests near Newton Stewart!
