UNSER, JONES AND MEARS TO COMPETE WHEEL-TO-WHEEL IN CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS PRESENTED BY BOSCH SPARK PLUGS MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. -- Bobby Unser, Parnelli Jones and Roger Mears will compete in the first Challenge of Champions, a wheel-to-wheel event presented by Bosch Spark Plugs, that will open competition in the July 4 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The event for the three former Pikes Peak champions is scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 4, just before the race's scheduled 10:30 start. In a break with the race's traditional format, they will race side-by-side in identically prepared Toyota Celicas, motoring from the starting line to Glen Cove, the halfway point of the race. Unser is the winningest driver in the history of the race, having one 13 titles in four different classes. He is also a three-time champion of the Indianapolis 500, a two-time U.S. Auto Club national champion, a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, and one of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association Legends of Racing. His youngest daughter, Jeri, is competing as a rookie on Pikes Peak this year. Jones is a two-time winner of Pikes Peak's Super Stock Car Division (1963, '64), the 1963 Indy 500 champion, a national champion in USAC's Midget, Sprint Car and Stock Car divisions, a two-time winner of Baja, Calif., desert races, and a long-time car owner. The Vels Parnelli Jones Racing Team has won 53 national championship races. Jones' youngest son, P.J., continues to compete on a national basis. Mears won the 1972 and '73 Open Wheel races on Pikes Peak and added a Super Stock Car title in 1985. Though he once competed on the Indy Car circuit with his younger brother, Rick, much of Roger's success came in desert off-road racing, where he won six consecutive SCORE Off Road World Championships. He was also a mainstay in Mickey Thompson's circuit of stadium off-road races. Tickets for the race can be purchased at the Hill Climb's Educational Museum, at Colorado Springs King Soopers stores, Daniels Chevrolet in Colorado Springs, Tire Centers, Inc., in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and at the Pikes Peak Highway toll gate on race day (cash only at the toll gate). The race will be broadcast live on the mountain and in Colorado Springs by KRDO Radio (1240 AM).
