Toyota’s Neal Bates has backed up his superb Heat 1 win over Subaru’s Possum Bourne to claim Heat 2 by just 3 seconds, Bates struggling over the final stages with a centre differential problem. Bates took the early advantage, grabbing 14 seconds off Bourne over just the first two stages, Bourne suffering from a blown centre diff gasket. Bourne edged back into contention over the last stages while Bates suffered, however the Kiwi driver ran out of stages, the Toyota Corolla World Rally Car driver too far ahead to take the back to back win over the final 3km stage around De Bortoli Winery.
Cody Crocker cleaned up in Group N, the Subaru package was unstoppable over the Melbourne stages. Closest rival Ed Ordynski ran into trouble late in the day, mishearing a pace note on SS4 and running off the road before a flat on SS5 dropped the South Australian even further back. Dean Herridge capitalized on Ordynski’s dramas, claiming fourth outright and winning the Privateer’s trophy for the event.
