Leading Formula 2 runner Simon Evans has announced his retirement from the 1999 Forest Rally, a day prior to the event even beginning! After suffering major engine problems at the event's Media Day, closer inspection of the engine by the VW mechanics has shown the true extent of the damage.

A broken conrod punched a hole through the VW Golf's engine block, severely damaging the valves and warping the head. The dramatic exit has also thrown Evan's chances of contesting Rally New Zealand, the next round of the World and Asia-Pacific Rally Championships.

'We are very disappointed' said Sue Evans, co driver and wife of Simon. 'We were told the engine was a 'don't touch' part, but this has changed now! We are not sure if we will do New Zealand now, but we will be trying!'

This development throws the F2 battle wide open, with the second Golf of Jason Slot still running, and no Brett Middleton and Rick Bates, there may be a surprise F2 winner come Sunday afternoon.
