Madeira and Prata reach Marinha Grande in 2nd place.
Marinha Grande (Portugal), September 29, 2002 - Team Ford Galp Energia Racing has finished the 2002 edition of the Rota do Vidro Rally in 2nd place overall, not being able to reach the initially proposed victory.
This Rui Madeira and Fernando Prata classification also puts an end to the Portuguese Rally title raid, as their main rivals from Peugeot got another victory, which granted them the needed 10 points to reach that same goal.
"Although our high expectations on this rally, due to the previous testing sessions that we did before the rally started, everything went down the drain with that minute lost on Friday's super special stage", said Rui Madeira. "Then we couldn't have the ideal car set-up to ideally face the stage conditions, plus the minor problems that keep on appearing where we least expect".
Starting Leg 2 with a disadvantage of almost three minutes for Miguel Campos/Carlos Magalhães, the Ford Focus WRC drivers implemented the possible momentum on the day's three stages - Pedrogão Grande, Sertã and Cernache - first round, where the car showed no problems whatsoever. "It was logical for us to think that it was impossible to reduce the gap on normal conditions. So we maintained our pace and have awaited for the events to happen". On those same stages second run, the Ford drivers managed to improve their morning scores on all occasions, even getting best time score on the rally's penultimate stage.
"Now that the drivers and co-drivers championships are decided for Peugeot team, to whom I send our global Ford Galp Energia Racing team congratulations, we must face the last three rounds of the season with the same objective that lead us on the previous events: fighting for victories", said Anabela Correia, Team Manager. "Ford is the most winning rally make on the Portuguese rally history and we want to maintain that position, so we'll have to think on victories whenever we do rallying".
