Ford wants a victory at Espinho's roulette.
Lisboa (Portugal), October 10, 2002 - The next bet for Ford Galpenergia Racing team will be placed at the Casino de Espinho Rally, the 8th event of the 2002 Portuguese Rally Series, to be held between tomorrow and Saturday around Espinho and Vale de Cambra region.
Now without the pressure inherent to the title chasing, Rui Madeira and Fernando Prata will be at the Estrela e Vigorosa Sport organized event eager to fight for the overall victory, by using their Ford Focus WRC reliability, now that the car has returned from a quick visit to M-Sport, where some corrections were made to some of the details that prevented a better performance at the past Rota do Vidro Rally.
"Now that both the drivers and co-drivers titles are definitively out of our reach, we'll be exclusively thinking on running for the overall victory", said Madeira. To reach that goal, the pair will be at the wheel of the Galp Energia and Ford Dealer Network sponsored Focus WRC, adopting a full rhythm and with no pressure whatsoever for any points strategy.
The Casino de Espinho Rally will have about 394 km of stages, divided into two legs. Tomorrow evening, the rally starts for its first three stages - Agras, St. Antonio and Figueiredo/Freita - followed by another eight stages on Saturday, on a double round through Arestal, Mouta Velha, Freita and Macieira de Cambra, totalling 152 km against the clock.
"This year's rally has two different paths, as on one side it is similar to the 2001 edition, namely at Agras and Arestal stages (this one a bit smaller), Macieira de Cambra and Freita are run opposite to what has then happened, on the other hand, Mouta Velha is somewhat different, barely crossing some sections of the stage run last year. But the main novelties come at Sto. Antonio and Figueiredo/Freita stages, very technical and with lots of driving work to be done", said the driver.
After the official event recees, the drivers will swap places from the normal 2.0 Focus for the WRC vehicle, for the private testing session to be held later today. "As usual, at this test we'll see the results of the work that was done on the car between the two rallies and we'll make the necessary set-up choices for the rally itself, a set of solutions that we'll also be able to confirm during tomorrow morning official shakedown session", he added.
