SHIMWELLS YAMAHA'S GRAY DICK IS 2007 OFF-ROAD BIKE CHAMP
Team Shimwells Yamaha/Panasonic's Gray Dick, is the 2007 SA national off- road motorcycle champion!
Dick, who was leading the overall and Open Class standings before the Ermelo Toyota 400, the final round of the national championship that took place this weekend in Mpumalanga, claimed the title for the second time in his off-road racing career when he completed the race in second place.
The Ermelo Toyota 400 consisted of 360 kilometres with riders starting the main race on Saturday according to a seeded list as there was no time-trail to determine the starting order. Clayton Enslin won the event with Kenneth Gilbert claiming third place overall. Dick's second place in the Open Class was also good enough to ensure him this title for 2007.
After eight rounds of the championship and six podium positions, Dick was leading former champion, Darryl Curtis, by a mere three points before the event and walked away as the newly crowned champion with Curtis finishing the race in sixth place and runner-up in the overall championship.
In the 200cc Class, former jet-ski champion, Casper Badenhorst, finished in fourth place to claim the third place in the overall 200cc Class championship for the season. Kyle Poppleton won this class and the title. Badenhorst, a young farmer in the Balfour area who has been competing in his first full off-road racing season for Team Shimwells Yamaha, scored consistently and bagged points after each of the eight events during the season. Carl du Toit, who competes with assistance from Shimwells Yamaha, third in the 200cc Class and was 12th overall.
