Sata Rallye Azores starts with grand show.
Honouring tradition, the Sata Rallye Azores started once again with a foreign driver leading the event, after running the 19,63 kilometres of the three SS in today's agenda. Finn Jani Passonen driving his Subaru Impreza WRC currently leads this FIA European Championship event with an 11s advantage.
Jani Passonen - 1P (Subaru Impreza WRC):
"During the first special stage we decided on a more cautious pace, since it was such a fast track it was not worth the risk. Especially since it is my first year at Azores driving the Subaru Impreza WRC. Overall I am adapting quite well, and most importantly everything ran smoothly with no problems and I am enjoying myself"
Rui Madeira 2P (Ford Focus WRC)
"The first SS did not run as well as we wanted. We had a small problem. The breaks were not right, but we corrected it at once. Tomorrow is a long day and of great importance to the final of this event"
Miguel Campos 3P (Peugeot 206 WRC)
"We had some problems with the clutch and it lost us some time mostly during the first SS. We had to switch suspensions in the parc fermé because they were so stiff"
Sebastian Lindholm 4P ( Subaru Impreza WRC)
"We took advantage of these three special stages to better adapt to our Subaru Impreza WRC, which went very well"
While the first four drivers fought for the lead, European Champ Armin Kremer (Ford Focus WRC) ended up with an unfortunate start, hitting the rear of his Focus WRC and puncturing the rear tyre on the second corner. In vengeance, Kremer flew the second SS and broke KKK's record by 1,5s. "I had a problem at the beginning of the first SS and lost some time, but it is not serious. Tomorrow we mark a strong pace in order to recover the lost time and go for the lead"
