Martin Schanche enjoyed a weekend of motorsport highs and lows at Valkenswaard in Holland for the sixth round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship. He qualified his special Opel Astra on pole for the main final but was unable to take the start.

Schanche had dominated the qualifying heats with a pair of second places and then a win (by over two seconds) of the final heat, producing a set of results good enough to place the Opel in the prime spot of the day's premiere Final. But after close inspection of his Astra's prototype turbocharged engine by his race engineer, it was decided to withdraw from the racing due to overstressed pistons in two cylinders.

The pole position was seen as a definite boost to the team's morale going into the next round, Schanche home event in Norway on September 3.
