The 7th Round of the European Rally Championships - dramatic start to final day...

Just seconds in it--.

Full attack. That was what was on everyone`s minds as the 51 teams left Parc Ferme for the final day of the Rali Vinho da Madeira. The first stage of the day was the longest of the rally, 27.3km from Funchal and up through the centre of the island. Maybe the overnight leader Renato Travaglio was trying too hard and too soon to build on his 5.6sec lead, but whatever the reason, he hit a small wall after about 5kms and crashed out of the rally. The car partially blocked the road so co-driver Flavio Zanella was quickly out to warm the other teams.

Miguel Campos set fastest time in 17min 07.1sec with Thiry 3.1sec after and Lundgaard now up in 3rd place recording a time of 17min 12.2sec. Thiry was the new leader but only by 1.4secs.

Thiry won stage 13 and an improving Lundgaard took stage 14..his first stage win of the rally.

When the teams arrived back for service in Funchal, Thiry still led but only by 0.8sec, with Lundgaard over a minute behind in 3rd place and Francois Delecour 4th.

Bruno Thiry - Peugeot 206 WRC

I am now first on the road and that is never easy, but the car is going well and we have to take it one stage at a time.

Miguel Campos - Peugeot 206 WRC

We changed the set-up a little and now I am happier with the car. The rest of the rally it will have to be full attack from me.

Henrik Lundgaard - Ford Focus WRC

Yesterday we were not completely satisfied with the set-up but the changes we wanted to make would take time so we left it till the last service of the day. The crew have been magnificent and today it`s like driving a completely new car. I think I should have made the changes sooner.

Francois Delecour - Peugeot 206 WRC

I didn`t realize it but we were on cuts this morning and the car handled differently--but I'm happy with 4th place. I don`t think I can catch Lundgaard and I have 2 minutes over the 5th placed car so, like I said I'm happy.

The teams have 3 short stages before returning to service at 1300hrs.
