The 7th Round of The European Rally Championships - New Leader
All change and an exciting finish in sight--.

When the teams arrived back in Funchal for service after Stage 17, there was a new leader in the Rali Vinho da Madeira. Miguel Campos had won 2 of the previous 3 stages and now it was him who was in the driving seat. He had taken a 0.8sec deficit after 14 and now had a lead of 4.2secs over Bruno Thiry, with Henrik Lundgaard third and Francois Delecour fourth.

At this crucial stage in the rally, when every second counts, only a minor mistake can decide the outcome, not just of this event but also the whole of the European Championship.

The drama continued in the service area. As the teams began leaving for the next three stages, Lundgaard remained in his place with his mechanics working feverishly. They were changing the cambelt for safety reasons when it had shown signs of wear. As the seconds turned to minutes, Delecours team manager came round to see what had happened, he had helped Lundgaard to second place in this rally in 2000 and commiserated with the Dane when it was obvious that he would not beat the time deadline.

So as the teams left for the next circuit of 3 short stages, Miguel Campos was in first place, 4.2 seconds ahead of Bruno Thiry, with Francois Delecour in third place.
