High hopes for Toyota 1000 Desert Race debutante.

You are never too old to go off-road racing and to prove the point Sam Moolla will make his debut as a driver on the tough Toyota 1000 Desert Race, round three of the Bankfin Off-Road Championship, from June 21 to 23.

At the age of 51 Moolla is no spring chicken, but just recently has been putting in extra time in the gymnasium. An advantage too, is that Moolla is no newcomer to the world of off-road racing.

For more than 20 years Sam has been a member of back-up crews for his brother, the late Abdul Variawa, and nephew Shameer. He has also competed as co-driver on a number of club and regional off-road events but the Toyota 1000 Desert Race will see him for the first time at the sharp end of the stick as a driver on a national event.

"I have always wanted to drive on a national, and finally thought now was as good a time as any to take the plunge," said Sam who will share a Corn Bake Motorsport Jimco with Zaheer Bodhanya. "This is a tough event but I have always kept reasonably fit, and just lately have been putting in extra time at the gym.

"The Jimco was previously raced by Shameer and has now been fitted with a Wiks V6 motor, and I reckon we'll be competitive. I'm looking forward to the experience, and Zaheer and I will be aiming at making it through to the finish."
