PROFILES ON MAYO & DISTRICT MOTORSPORT CLUB MEMBERS ENTERED IN THE 2000 DOWNHILL HOTEL MAYO STAGES RALLY by Jarlath Sweeney & Sean McHugh.
a.. James McGreal tops the pole this year after a record year achieving 1st in Class 14 in the Four Seasons Hotel Border Series and 2nd in Class in the National Rally Championship. The Foxford Garage owner and rally preparation expert runs a Nissan Sunny GTi-R and rumour has it that another Japanese machine may be on the cards this season.
b.. Paul Cleary, the Kiltimagh Nissan Dealer, has brother Brian again on the notes. They won Class 5 in the Border Series last year and are hoping to maintain their 100% finish record today in their Nissan Micra GT.
c.. Stage sponsor, Noel McCarrick, Main Peugeot Dealer, Tubbercurry and Opel Dealer, Roscommon is out in Class 4 again this season in his Group 'N' Subaru Impreza. Noel had a top 10 finish here last year, but mechanical woes and a few visits to the scenery cut his season short.
d.. Rory O'Connor and Francis Kenny, from Ballyhaunis, make a welcome return to the stages after a year of highs and lows. After a good run in the Galway International, a crash in this event last year resulted in a quiet year due to mechanical difficulties on most outings.
e.. John Duffy - what can one say about the Crossmolina man? Mr. Mayo & District Motorsport Club and formerly known as Mr. Ballina Motor Club. John eats, sleeps and drinks motorsport and does all the washing up as well. The rally bug has hit other members of the family, as son Killian is progressing well in the Navigation Championship and has had a run or two in Autocrosses also.
f.. McHugh's Rally Crew with new backers Corrib Oil are ready to roll again this season. Sean McHugh shook off the cobwebs of his Peugeot 205 GTi and himself (?) at the Sligo Single Stage last January and is looking forward to improving on last seasons 3rd overall in the National Championship and Border Series in Class 14B, starting here! New navigator, Michael Haran, is in for fast learning curve.
g.. Pat and Eamonn McGuinness from Ballymote enter their Class 11 Group 4 specification MK II Escort and hope to match their Top 20 finish in Sligo last year. Pat will be glad not to be driving the Scania on some of these stages!
h.. Vinny Kelly has Vincent Junior calling the notes in their trusty Samba, or is it Impreza? No well, just call it an Imprezzive Samba! Vinny, a founder member of Ballina Motor Club now known as Mayo & District Motorsport Club sponsors Stages 2and 8 today.
i.. Andrew Mullen, from Ballisadare, has wife Elaine Docherty as navigator once again (poor woman!). In a Toyota Celica, they collectively aim for a Class 14C win. Andrew's company Sligo Pallet Supplies is a Stage sponsor.
j.. Anthony and Stephen O'Brien are hoping for another good outing after their Class 7 win and 24th overall in the recent Sligo Single Stage. They campaign in an Astra run previously by Noel McCarrick.
k.. The Lang Brothers, David and Emlyn, enter their MKI Ford Escort in Class 10. They too had a good run in Sligo recently and with the support of their family Garage business in Dromore-West, prize-winning crystal is what they are after.
l.. Ronan Moore with brother Declan in the co-drivers seat this time around, hope to avoid the scenery in their Coyne Tyres backed Toyota. Timber haulage contractor may need the Cummins engine from his ERF truck to shoot up the leaderboard!
m.. Pat and Eddie O'Hora enter their Business Supplies backed Astra in Class 9. Newcomer to the drivers seat, Pat enjoyed his first outing in Sligo. Obviously he knew where the speed traps were!!
n.. Barry Cuffe with Tony McGing on the notes enter a front wheel drive Twin Cam Toyota Corolla in Class 10 prepared by fellow Clubman James McGreal. The Belcarra/Claremorris pairing just missed out on a prize in Sligo in their first run.
o.. John Rowland, former Clerk of the Course, has girlfriend Edel Cafferty in the co-drivers seat. Their Escort XR3i entered in Class 14 is in good shape after the test run in Sligo recently.
p.. Walter Burke and Noel Reilly (Escort) represent the Williamstown, County Galway constituency of the club. Garage owner, Walter, was the best club finisher in the National Autocross held in Claremorris last summer.
q.. Thomas Fahy entered Class 11 in an Escort with brother Aidan Fahy calling the notes. The Ballinrobe Mace Supermarket owner says he will be hoping for a top 10 finish ..... in Class!
r.. Fiacra Moran and Kenneth Jordan enter a Nissan Violet in Class 10, which was formerly run by Paul Cleary and later Barry Cuffe. The Belcarra/Ballyglass combo aim to finish their debut rally.
s.. Ballina's Kevin Neary and Derek McCarthy reading the notes and together they run a Peugeot 205 in Class 10.
t.. Joe Heneghan enter a 1600 Nova in Class 10. The Abbey Tyres proprietor can't choose between Michelin or Pirelli for the day! Malcolm Wilson is to advise!
u.. Donal and Kenneth Molloy make the long trip from Foxford to the Stages (at enormous expense!) in a Class 5 Nova.
v.. Noel Finlay and Peter Gallagher from Ballinrobe venture out in Class 10 with a 1600 Escort. The Shell Service Station operator is using the same fuel as Michael Schumacher's Ferrari! In other words get out of his way!!
