Atkinson Heads To China

Fresh from showing good pace in his World Rally Championship debut in New Zealand last weekend Chris Atkinson has jetted back into Australia yesterday and almost straight out again heading to China for second round of the Chinese National Rally Championship this weekend.

The 24-year-old Gold Coast driver finished third in his debut with the GT Tyres Subaru Rally team at the opening round of the Championship in March. This result was a very rewarding result given the fact that it was the first tarmac rally of Atkinson's young career.

"The opening round in March was certainly a great experience working with a new team in a new country and driving on tarmac taught me to be even smoother in my driving style," said Atkinson.

"Over the weekend the car had some problems and I was running on three cylinders a lot of the time so it was a great result to finish third under the circumstances."

Atkinson will be one of five entries in the GT Tyres Subaru team competing this weekend in the 90-car field aboard a 2003 Subaru WRX Sti.

"The Championship is different to any other that I have been a part of with so many cars in the rally and in particular in each team, normally the most in a team is 2 or 3 but in China it is regularly 5 or 6 cars in a team," said Atkinson.

Atkinson will be joined in the Championship this weekend by his co-driver and brother Ben along with Aussie counterpart Spencer Lowndes who has also secured a drive in the Championship.

In addition to China's best rally drivers there is also drivers from Thailand and Finland competing in the Championship.
