One More Week Until The 40th Arctic Lapland Rally
Already traditional Arctic Lapland Rally will be driven in Rovaniemi region on January 27th to 29th 2005. Just under 200 competitors have been registered to the Rally. During this weekend Finland's toughest drivers are competing to win the legendary rally. Also the battle to win the Finnish Championship title starts in Rovaniemi. Well known Formula drivers Mika Hakkinen and Keke Rosberg are again making their appearance. Hakkinen's co- driver is a familiar face from the previous year Risto Pietilainen, who arrives to Rovaniemi straight from Monte Carlo, where he reads notes to Harri Rovanpera. Heikki Kovalainen reads notes in the Arctic Lapland Rally for the third time, this time for Timo Hulkkonen. Most interesting foreign name in the competition is probably Ford's team chief's, Malcolm Wilson's son, Matthew Wilson. For some of the team's this rally is a good test before the Swedish Rally on 10. - 13.2.2005.
Familiarisation to the route starts already on Saturday the 22nd of January when most of the drivers arrive to Rovaniemi. The actual event starts on Wednesday; Rally girl contest will be held on Wednesday night in Hotel Pohjanhovi. On Thursday competitors start to test their cars in the Hietavaara's shakedown. And on Friday we reach the point when the first competitor of the 40th Arctic Lapland Rally starts from Sampoaukea square at 12 o'clock.
Rally starts with a super special stage of Mantyvaaran/Pohjanhovi. There will be six special stages on Friday on the south side of Rovaniemi and the day ends with another super special stage of Mantyvaara/Shell. To celebrate the 40th Arctic Lapland Rally a fireworks show has been organised here before the first car starts.
Saturday will be a longer day, since there are seven special stages. Route goes around Jyrhamajarvi Lake to Kaihuavaara and on to Pirttikoski, where the journey continues through Hanhikoski to Kemijarvi. From there, the Rally continues with a legendary special stage through military area reaching back to Rovaniemi. The third Mantyvaara/Elisa super special stage finishes the Rally. And the winners are expected at the finish line on Saturday 29th of January 2005 at 16.56 o'clock.
If you want to get closer to the cars and the drivers and see the mechanics in action you should head to the service areas. On Friday the service area is located outside of Shell Rovaniemi on Teollisuustie road all day. On Saturday the service area moves around with the special stages; morning starts in Shell on Teollisuustie road, where it moves to the second service park in Vanttauskoski. From there the service area moves to Kemijarvi and last service of the day will be back in Shell on Teollisuustie road.
Results can be viewed online in real time at www.arcticrally.fi/eng/tulokset/index.php . YLE's Rally radio can be heard in Rovaniemi 96.7 Mhz and in Kemijarvi 99.9Mhz.
