LATE DRAMA UNFOLDS ON AGIP RALLY

Late drama - and a little confusion - was starting to unfold in the latter stages of the Agip Rally today.

Reigning champions and championship leaders Jan Habig and Douglas Judd ran into problems in Special Stage 12 - while in a comfortable lead. The factory VW crew lost a wheel in the stage and dropped more than 12 minutes to drop way down the pecking order.

Their problems were compounded, however, with reports that Habig and Judd had later been excluded from the event by clerk of the course Robert Marle. Unconfirmed reports said Judd was sitting in the back of the car - to balance out the missing wheel - with driver and navigator completing part of the stage without wearing safety belts and helmets.

The Habig/Judd woes moved Enzo Kuun and Guy Hodgson, who themselves lost a wheel earlier in the day, moved into the lead in the Daewoo Lanos. They were a reported to be a minute in front of Team Total Toyota Conquest of Etienne Lourens and Robert Paisley with Hergen Fekken and Dave Lewkowicz into third in the Dunair Toyota Conquest.

Fourth were Group N category leaders Hannes Grobler and Dave McGregor in the Bridgestone Nissan Sentra.

Among the late casualties were 11 time South African champion Sarel van der Merwe and Martin Botha in the second Daewoo Lanos. After a troubled day that saw the pair struggling with suspension problems and flirting with being time barred, the Lanos finally expired with a broken clutch.
