Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship-- A new era Irish for Rallying.

Cork, 20th May 2002: The 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship, the next step in the Ford Ireland"Ladder of Opportunity", will commence with the Shell Donegal International Rally on the 21st until the 23rd of June next.

With a starting line up of eight identical Ford Focus 2.0 litre Kit Cars and strict Championship Regulations which places greater emphasis on ability rather than budget, will guarantee some of the closest competition ever seen on these shores. The 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship will consist of five all tarmac events throughout Ireland.

The Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship has a total prize fund worth€ 16,000. The eventual Championship Winner also getting the opportunity to test a Focus World Rally Car and gain entry into the Ford Rallyesport Shootout competition, which sees the eventual winner securing a position with the Ford Rallyesport Junior Team.

"Each round of the series has been chosen to offer each competitor the opportunity to gain experience on a wide variety of surfaces and style of event. Our goal is to make this series the most successful training ground for future Rally Champions providing each competitor with a broad range of experience in a high tech, professional environment at an affordable cost." said Declan Foley, Focus Brand Manager, Ford Ireland.

"Never before in the history of Irish Rallying has there been a greater opportunity for Irish drivers to progress onto a large stage. It is another first for the Ford Motor Company and underlines Ford's commitment to Irish rallying" said Tom Collins, Championship Director.

Designed to promote young Irish rallying talent, the Championship is part of Ford's Ladder of Opportunity, that sees the Ford Motor Company providing young drivers with the introductory Ford KA Rally Car, then onto the Ford Focus 2.0 litre Kit Car Rally Championship, 1600 Puma Junior World Rally Car and eventually the Focus World Rally Car.
