Cunningham takes pole for SPEED Touring Car finale at VIR.

ALTON, Va. (October 26, 2002) -- Peter Cunningham, of W. Bend, Wis., captured his second SCCA Pro Racing SPEED Touring Car pole of 2002 and will lead the field in Sunday's season finale at the VIRginia International Raceway SpeedFest, Presented by the Justin Bell GT Motorsports Experience.

Driving the No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura Integra R, Cunningham turned a fastest lap of 2:11.058 (89.822 mph) in the 30-minute timed Woody's Ice Qualifying session. A subsequent Top-10 Shootout between the fastest 10 cars from that session was to determine their starting positions in the first 10 spots, but Cunningham's teammate Pierre Kleinubing put an end to the session with a huge wreck, which saw him roll the car several times in the high-speed esses.

Kleinubing was uninjured, and the No. 1 RealTime Racing Acura Integra can likely be repaired to make the race, but the extensive cleanup on a time-certain schedule meant that only Will Turner, who went out first, got his shootout lap in. With only one competitor putting in a timed lap, SCCA Pro Racing officials were forced to revert to the earlier qualifying session times to determine the grid.

"That's certainly not the way we planned to start up front," said Cunningham, who can clinch the Championship with an 11th place finish. "The wheels on Pierre's car are pointing straight. He's won races in cars that were twisted worse than this one."

Chuck Hemmingson, of W. Des Moines, Iowa, will start second in the No. 19 OPM Motorsports/Mazda/TBPG Mazda Protege ES after running a lap of 2:11.529 (89.501 mph). Taz Harvey, of Danville, Calif., will go off fourth in his Honda Civic Si, followed by Ken Dobson, of Carmel Valley, Calif., (BMW 325) and Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., in a Mazda Protege ES.
