Rodrigo Baptista survived a seven-minute sprint to the checkers at Utah Motorsports Campus to deliver the GTS win in his Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche Cayman.
Baptista came home just one second clear of an intense battle that went all race between James Courtney’s Maserati Gran Turismo and the Panoz Avezzano of Ian James.
The latter pair initially ran behind the fast starting Nate Stacy in the second FLM Porsche and the KTM Xbow of Martin Barkey. However, Barkey then passed Stacy at the start of Lap 2, and Courtney, under intense pressure from James on Lap 5, passed Stacy and James followed him through.
At the final restart, Barkey, who’d been hassling Baptista for the lead through the middle portion of the race, appeared to get some severe tire pick-up, allowing first Courtney then James ahead. However, neither of them could do anything about Baptista, despite Courtney setting fastest lap of he race, some half a second faster than then winner.
Barkey held on to finish third, mere tenths of a second ahead of the well-driven Ginetta G55 of local boy Drew Stavely.
Stacy’s Porsche was also beaten by the leading GTS-Am driver, George Kurtz in the McLaren 570S of GMG Racing.
Lawson Aschenbach had to pit his Chevy Camaro with tire issues, but returned to finish ninth overall and seventh in the Pro category.
