Turner Fighting Again In The Streets
ST. PETERSBURG, FL - 03/29/2006 - Will Turner returns to World Challenge racing for this weekend's round two of the SPEED Touring Car Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida. Turner will be behind the wheel of the H&R Springs/EdgeRock Technology Partners BMW 325i, the same car that carried teammate Bill Auberlen to victory at the season-opener at Sebring Raceway two weeks ago.
Will Turner has been an active participant in World Challenge since 1998. He has started in over 60 World Challenge races with over 40 top ten finishes. Under his guidance the Turner Motorsport team has won two Touring Car championships and scored 14 victories. Turner himself has three of those wins (Grand Rapids, MI, Pikes Peak, CO, Mid Ohio). His last race in World Challenge was last year at Lime Rock Park where mechanical trouble knocked him out while he was running in third place.
This weekend's race is on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The track is laid out on 1.8 miles of city streets and an airport runway on the shores of Tampa Bay. Turner's first win came at a street race in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1999.
Will Turner, pilot, #2 H&R Springs/EdgeRock Technology BMW 325i:
"This is very exciting for me on a number of levels - I've won on street courses before and World Challenge used to race on a lot of them. I'm thinking that experience is going to count a lot in this race. I've also got the power and handling of the BMW thanks to H&R and the Turner crew and I'm going to use them to my advantage even with the weight adjustments that SCCA has made to us. We should have an edge in getting the power off the corners."
The Turner Motorsport BMW will carry sponsorship from EdgeRock Technology Partners - a national IT staffing and enterprise solutions firm. EdgeRock is currently expanding their Central Florida division and celebrating their first anniversary this weekend. The firm is located in downtown St. Petersburg. Will Turner is planning on giving them more to celebrate come Sunday afternoon.
Local hangout Moe's Mexican Restaurant is also signed on to the flying yellow/blue BMW.
Practice sessions kick off the weekend on Friday morning. Qualifying will be on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm ET. The 50-minute, 31-lap race will be on Sunday afternoon at 12:45pm immediately before the IndyCar Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The SPEED Channel will be broadcasting the race on Tuesday, April 4 at 4:00pm ET.
