3R Racing Takes Speed GT Points Lead to St. Petersburg
Englewood, Colorado - Following the first round of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series, 3R Racing has its three drivers' in the top ten in points. Tommy Archer, 2004 defending series champion, is leading the chase coming off of a win at historic Sebring just one week ago. Teammates Phil McClure and Tim Wiens sit in sixth and ninth heading into round two to be held on a temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The 1.8-mile layout will flow through the city streets situated along Tampa Bay in the Florida coastal city. The track features 14-turns and three straights to challenge the 3R Vipers handling and horsepower, six ton concrete barriers lining the circuit will challenge the drivers. The Speed GT series will be running in support of the Indy Racing League's first ever road race.
Tommy Archer, driving the number 1/c3controls/3R Viper, is no stranger to street circuits, "I like street courses. I have not driven this version of the Viper on a closed circuit, but I am looking forward to seeing what it can do. I think that this type of track rewards a more experienced driver. I think that the Cadillacs and the Porsches will be tough. We are going to have to qualify well and get a good start to run upfront."
Phil McClure, piloting the number 2/FirstTier Bank/3R Viper, "the last street circuit I ran was Trois Rivieres three years ago. St. Petersburg is a short and tight circuit. Our Vipers are kind of heavy, so that should favor the Porsche with their rear engine they can get the power down and they are lighter. I think the street circuits are fun. They are a fresh challenge and I like to run new tracks."
Piloting the number 3/FirsTier Bank/ 3R Viper is team owner Tim Wiens. "It was really nice to get a good start at Sebring; we are leading the driver points and have Dodge in the lead in the manufacturers chase. We have three races within six weeks, this doesn't allow for a lot of time to prepare the cars. St. Petersburg should be a challenge. The circuit layout looks tight and the top runners in the series should be nose-to-tail around here. I am sure that we will see a few cautions, so restarts will be a key factor."
Round two of the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT series at St. Petersburg will be run on Sunday, April 3rd at 9:45 a.m. and will be televised on Speed Channel, Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m. EST.
