McClure, Auberlen lead SCCA Speed World Challenge Sebring practice.
SEBRING, Fla. (March 12, 2003) -- Phil McClure, of Floris, Iowa, and Bill Auberlen, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., paced practice for the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT and Touring Car Championships, respectively, in preparation for this week's season-opening round at Sebring International Raceway.
Driving his No. 73 Aggregate Industries/3R Racing Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, McClure ran a fastest lap of 2:13.012 (100.141 mph) in the morning session. McClure's time was over six seconds faster than the previous track qualifying record, due in large part to the new Toyo Proxes RA-1 DOT-approved race tires that the series switched to this season.
John Young, of Woodside, Calif., who put in only three laps in the morning session due to mechanical difficulties with his Saleen SR, was second fastest with a 2:13.684 (99.638 mph). Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., was third fastest with a lap of 2:14.875 (96.985 mph) in the new Champion Audi RS 6, Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Auberlen, driving a BMW Team PTG M3, completed the top five.
In SCCA Speed Touring Car, Auberlen, driving the No. 93 Turner Motorsports/H&R Springs BMW 325i, was fastest in both sessions, with a best lap of 2:27.618 (90.233 mph). Bob Stretch, of Dallas, Texas, was second quick with a lap of 2:28.552 (89.666 mph) in the Wheels America BMW 325Ci. Fitzgerald, driving the Team FBR/Trans Sport Lexus IS300 entry, Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., and Ken Dobson, of Carmel Valley, Calif., completed the top five.
Auberlen's fast time was over two seconds quicker than the qualifying record of 2:30.288 set last season. Unlike Speed GT where the increase in speed can be partially attributed to new tires, the Speed Touring Car series is running on the same Toyo Proxes T1-S street tire used last season.
The SCCA Speed World Challenge Championships qualify Thursday at 11:20 a.m. (eastern) for Friday's races, part of the 51st Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring. For more information, including live session timing, please visit www.world-challenge.com.
