RAIN WASHES OUT SPEED WORLD CHALLENGE QUALIFYING AT SEBRING; ALTENBURG, HENZLER TO START FIRST BASED ON PRACTICE TIMES

SEBRING, Fla. (March 17, 2005) -- The much anticipated heavy rain finally hit Central Florida, necessitating the cancellation of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT and Touring Car qualifying. The starting lineups for Friday's Round One races at Sebring International Raceway will be based on the combination of Wednesday's qualifying sessions.

"Due to the amount of standing water on the circuit, we felt it was best to preserve the field for Friday's races," SCCA Pro Racing Chief Steward Pat di Natale said.

Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., will start the SCCA SPEED Touring Car Round One race from the Air Force Reserve Pole Position based on his fastest practice time of 2:21.845 (93.905 mph) in the No. 72 Mazdaspeed/Tri-Point Motorsports Mazda 6. His teammate Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., will start second, followed by defending two-time defending winner Bill Auberlen (BMW 325i), Peter Cunningham (Acura TSX) and Pierre Kleinubing (Acura TSX).

German Wolf Henzler will start first in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Round One race, based on his fastest time of 2:11.572 (101.237 mph) set at the end of the afternoon practice session on Wednesday in his No. 55 Applied Materials/Jongbloed Wheels Porsche 911 Cup. Defending series Champion Tommy Archer will line up second in his No. 1 c3controls/3R-Racing Dodge Viper, followed by teammate Phil McClure and the Cadillac CTS-Vs of Andy Pilgrim and Max Papis.

Prize money and points will not be awarded for qualifying and there will be no official "pole" recorded for either driver, as practice does not constitute an official qualifying session. Generally, the grid would be set by point standings in the event of a qualifying cancellation. However, with Sebring serving as the first race of the season, no points were available to set the grid.

The weather forecast for Friday is promising, as the rain showers are expected to leave Central Florida in time for the races. SPEED Touring Car is scheduled to make its standing start at 11:45 a.m. (Eastern) and SPEED GT will start at 3:45 p.m. (Eastern). Live Timing & Scoring is available through www.world-challenge.com.

The races will be broadcast on SPEED Channel Sunday, March 27 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
