Nissan Nets 13th at Sebring Touring Opener

March 19, 2004 - Sebring, Florida -- TeamRTR and its Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V made their 2004 SPEED World Challenge Touring Car series season debut at Sebring International Raceway, but loss of a transmission gear relegated driver Peter Cunningham to an unusual 13th place finish.

Cunningham qualified his Sentra SE-R in 7th place for the 50-minute race, one of many cars below the old track qualifying record. The speed increase was thanks to an upgraded version of the specification tires all cars race on, and to the extensive engine and chassis development done by the TeamRTR crew over the winter months.

"We didn't debut the Nissan until Round 2 of the championship last year, so this is the first trip to Florida for the Nissan," said Cunningham. "We were happy with our speed during the week, so it's a shame we had a problem today that cost us a top-five finish."

Cunningham maintained seventh place on the opening lap, but the cars were forced to run the next 27 minutes behind the safety car after another car crashed, and the wrecker retrieving the car suffered its own mechanical failures.

Once the race re-started on lap eight, Peter climbed to fifth place, but then became slowed by the gear problem.

Sebring's race will be televised by the SPEED Channel with an air date of Sunday, March 21 at Noon (EST).
