Two top ten finishes for Turner Motorsport drivers.
Infineon/Sears Point Raceway, Sonoma, CA - 07/28/2003 - Bill Auberlen capped off an amazing day when he dominated the Speed Touring Car race yesterday in his Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW at Infineon/Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California. He also posted a dominating win in this morning's Speed GT event in a BMW M3. Will Turner in the #92 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i also scored a top ten finish.
Auberlen qualified on the pole, led the entire 50-minute race, set the race's fastest lap, and took the checkered flag in his #93 BMW 325i. All of this just moments after a top five finish in the American Le Mans series race in an LMP900 racecar and leading a 1-4 sweep of the positions in Sunday morning's Speed GT event. During yesterday's race, he pulled away from traffic from the standing start and won with a half-second lead over the second place car. This is the second race-weekend in a row - and third of the year - in which he has won the race from the pole position.
Will Turner also did well with his sixth-place finish. With lots of bustling during the 50-minute race, Turner kept his racing clean and avoided contact. Frank Selldorff in the #94 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i did battle further down in the pack and came away with a seventeenth place finish in his first Touring Car race at the 12-turn, 2.52 mile Sears Point Raceway.
Auberlen put greater distance between himself and the rest of the Speed Touring Car competition in the season-long race for the Championship. He led the Championship going into this weekend and now sits firmly in first with a 30-point margin over Pierre Kleinubing.
Today's race was the first in a series of events that run all the way into September. The Turner Motorsport cars will be on the road stopping at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course on August 8. The team has fond memories of Mid Ohio from 2002 when Will Turner took home first place honors.
The Speed Channel broadcast of the Sears Point round will begin on August 2 at 4pm. Keep checking www.world-challenge.com and www.tmsracing.com for more information and pictures from each event.
