TOPEKA, Kan. (May 7, 2003) -- Wheels America announced today that Neal Sapp will drive a second BMW 325Ci for the team, alongside team owner Bob Stretch, in the next two events of the SCCA Speed Touring Car schedule, at Mosport International Raceway and Lime Rock Park.
"Having someone of Neal's caliber wanting to join our team really validates the work we have put into this program," said Stretch, who finished 12th in the season's first event at Sebring after starting the race from pit lane. "Neal will drive the car I drove at Sebring and I will be in a brand new car that we are testing this week. The two cars will be identically prepared by the team."
"I'm very excited about this opportunity," said Sapp. "Bob [Stretch] is a quick driver and has put together a good program. I'm sure, with my previous BMW experience, that I can bring something to the team. We are going to see how everything works out and how things gel in the next two events."
Sapp, a five-time World Challenge race winner who has finished runner-up in the Speed Touring Car Championship on two occasions, sat out the season-opening event at Sebring in March while evaluating his driving options for 2003.
"I had a few opportunities come along that I decided to pass on," said Sapp. "I didn't want to come back until I found something really good and this ride with Wheels America looks like that opportunity.
"I may be a little rusty, having been out of the car for a while, so I've been driving anything I can to get ready. I'm confident that I'll be able to get up to speed right away."
