Braeselton, GA Lobo Motorsports brought home their first team victory in the Motorola Cup Series at Road Atlanta in their Compact-classed 1999 Mazda Miata. Piloted by series veterans John Phillips and Peter Tonelli, the #91 car dominated the race flag to flag, winning by more than a lap and setting a new lap record. They also finished 9th overall, ahead of many of the Sports, Touring and even Grand Sports class cars, thanks to strategic pit stop planning. This is the third podium finish for the team in their brief four-race history. John Phillips finished 3rd at Mosport and 2nd at Trois Riveres.
Were thrilled beyond words, beams team owner/driver Matt Whitaker. Weve been committed to putting the Mazda Miata back on the podium since mid-season when we began. The crew put in hundreds of hours getting these cars set up for this moment. We are fortunate to have incredible talent both behind the wheel and behind the wall. After Fridays qualifying, both of the Lobo team Mazda's were on the Compact class front row, with the #92 Miata on the pole thanks to a solid run by Mike Speck. He would start the race and hold steady in second place until the first round of pits stops. The second half of the race was filled with treacherous obstacles, including large quantities of oil in Turns 7 and 10 that caused many dramatic spins. Whitaker brought the car home in 4th position.
Lobo Motorsports was formed by Houston business owner Matt Whitaker in April. He began road racing in September 1998 and is rapidly rising through the professional ranks. Whitaker is also an experienced offshore sailboat racer, having won several world class yachting events, including the Admirals Cup.
Lobo Motorsports next stop is Watkins Glen for the October 2nd Motorola Cup event. Immediately following the event, Phillips and Whitaker will be at Mid-Ohio to challenge for the national championship SSB & SSC titles in SCCA's Valvoline Runoffs, Oct 8-10.
