BRASELTON, Ga. (October 3, 2001) -- Peter Cunningham, of W. Bend, Wis., inched one point closer to catching rival Michael Galati in the season-long SCCA Pro Racing Speedvision GT Championship by earning the Superchips pole position for Friday's Round Nine event, part of the Petit Le Mans Presented by Audi Weekend doubleheader finale. Galati, of N. Olmstead, Ohio, and legend Derek Bell, of England, completed the top three. Driving the No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura NSX SC, Cunningham turned a fast lap of 1:33.918 (97.361 mph) around the 2.54-mile circuit to take his sixth pole of the season, and close to within 13 points of Galati with only two races remaining. "Our lap was top-notch," said Cunningham, the all-time series wins leader. "We made a change after this morning's practice session to go fast for qualifying. It worked, but we could only do one lap. It just became too loose. "We'll go back to a different setup for the race, which we're confident will be strong." Galati used all the road and then some in his all-wheel-drive Champion Audi S4 Competition to turn a lap of 1:34.295 (96.972 mph), going off course at the exit of the final corner on his fastest lap, but keeping the car off the wall. Galati earned one point to Cunningham's two for the effort, and still is in a good position to secure his record-setting fourth World Challenge Drivers' Championship in only six years of competition. Bell enjoyed his best qualifying effort in the No. 8 Speedvision Legend of Motorsport Audi S4 Competition with a fastest lap of 1:34.689 (96.568 mph) to start on the inside of row two. Justin Jackson, of nearby Alpharetta, Ga., was fourth fastest, followed by defending race winner Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., in fifth--both in Porsche 911 GT3 Cups. Both Cunningham and Galati have another opportunity to earn points before Friday's race, with qualifying for Sunday's final round taking place Thursday afternoon.
