Gigliotti Sets Quickest Time In SPEED GT Practice At Road Atlanta
BRASELTON, Ga. (Sept. 22, 2004) -- Lou Gigliotti paced both SCCA Pro Racing SPEED GT Championship practice sessions Wednesday at Road Atlanta, turning a fast lap of 1:28.391 (103.449 mph) in his No. 28 Pro Long Tube Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
Gigliotti, of Dallas, set the quickest time of the day in the morning session and then led the way again in the 20-minute afternoon session as GT teams prepared for Friday's race at the Chevy Presents Petit Le Mans.
Team Cadillac teammates Andy Pilgrim and Max Angelelli, driving Cadillac CTS-Vs, set identical times to capture the second and third spots. Pilgrim, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Angelelli, of Monte Carlo, Monoco, both had a time of 1:28.816 (102.954 mph).
Gigliotti's effort beat the existing track record of 1:28.479 (103.346 mph) set by Mike Fitzgerald last season. He will be looking for his first pole of the season in qualifying Thursday for Round Nine of the SPEED GT Championship.
"There are a lot of fast cars out here," Gigliotti said. "I am privileged to be where I am. I just hope they don't have anything for us [in qualifying], because I would like nothing more than to start on the pole at least once this year. If we can start on the pole, that means we've got a good car.
Rounding out the top five in practice were Robin Liddell, of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the Jon Groom Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., in the 3R-Racing Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. Liddell's time was 1:28.966 (102.780 mph) and Archer was right behind in fifth at 1:29.004 (102.737 mph).
Archer sits in second place in the SPEED GT standings, trailing point leader Michael Galati by just 12 points. Galati, adjusting to recent competition adjustments to his Champion Racing Audi RS 6 Competition that went into effect for the first time at Road Atlanta, couldn't crack the top 10, settling for the 11th fastest time at 1:29.994 (101.606 mph).
SPEED GT qualifying is scheduled for 1:50 p.m. (EDT) Thursday, Sept. 23.
Round Nine of the GT Championship is set to get the green flag at 3:55 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, Sept. 24. Friday's race will air on SPEED Channel at 1:00 p.m. (EDT), Sunday Sept. 26.
