ANGELELLI, PAPIS LEAD CADILLAC TO SPEED GT FRONT ROW IN ATLANTA

BRASELTON, Ga. (April 16, 2005) -- Defending racewinner Max "The Ax" Angelelli won the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT pole position Saturday morning, taking the top spot for Sunday's sportsbook.com Grand Prix of Atlanta at Road Atlanta after ripping off a 1:26.605 (105.582 mph) on the first flying lap of the 20-minute session.

Angelelli's fellow Italian teammate, "Mad" Max Papis, now of Miami, Fla., guaranteed an all-XM Radio/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose/On Star Cadillac CTS-V front row as he turned a 1:27.093 (104.991) in his similar vehicle. Robin Liddell, of Edinburgh, Scotland, will start third after posting a 1:27.114 (104.966) in the No. 66 AXA Financial/PFAFF Porsche 911 Cup.

The pole was the fourth in Angelelli's SPEED World Challenge career and set a new qualifying record, breaking his own previous mark of 1:27.734, which came last year.

"I don't know if I can ever repeat that lap," Angelelli said. "To do it again, I don't think so. Even on my second lap, I was already off and I gave it up."

Many factors came together, including the weather. The Georgia skies had been cloudless all week, and Saturday morning was no different. Temperatures were in the upper 50s during qualifying and winds were light. Aside from Mother Nature, Angelelli said his personal history and Cadillac crewmen also aided his sizzling flyer.

"I had an excellent lap, and the car is absolutely outstanding," Angelelli said. "The team has done a great job. They have given me a great car, and I love this track. I have always been pretty fast here, and with me driving this car it's a perfect match."

It is Angelelli's first appearance with the team in 2004.

German Wolf Henzler will start fourth in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, followed by the Chevrolet Corvette C6 of Lou Gigliotti. Point leader Tommy Archer will start sixth in his Dodge Viper.

The Round Three sportsbook.com Grand Prix of Atlanta SPEED GT race is scheduled for Sunday at 8:55 a.m. (EDT) and can be followed via live timing and scoring and event recaps at www.world-challenge.com. The race will air on a tape-delayed basis on SPEED Channel later in the day, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (EDT).

SPEED Channel will broadcast the race Sunday afternoon on a tape-delayed basis at 1 p.m. (EST).
