Davis Leads Late SPEED GT Practice in Atlanta
BRASELTON, Ga. (Oct. 1, 2008) -- Brandon Davis, of Huntington Beach, Calif., was the fastest in Wednesday afternoon's final practice session and was fastest on the day in preparation for the Road Atlanta SCCA SPEED GT Finale Presented by Foametix®, part of the 11th Annual Petit Le Mans Presented by the All-New MAZDA6. Randy Pobst, of nearby Gainesville, and Tommy Milner, of Leesburg, Va., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 10 ACS/Sun Microsystems Ford Mustang Cobra, Davis enters qualifying as the man to beat for the second time in the last week, dating to last week's Round Nine race in New Jersey. Davis turned a fastest lap of 1:26.025 (106.294 mph) around the 12-turn, 2.54-mile circuit.
"We changed the rear ride height and some of the setup to loosen the car up a little bit," Davis said. "It's still a little too tight. My concern for qualifying is that I think I can run fast for one lap, but I think it's going to burn down the car if I try to run that every lap. That's what we're trying to figure out right now.
"I've got some ideas, but some of it starts with the overall makeup of the car. I don't know what the right balance is, but hopefully we can find it for tomorrow."
Pobst was second fastest on the day, turning his best time of 1:26.241 (106.028 mph) in the afternoon session. Pobst enters the weekend with a 92-point lead and can clinch his second-straight Drivers' Championship by simply starting Friday's race in his No. 1 K-PAX Racing Porsche 911 GT3.
Milner, who led the morning session in the No. 21 Rahal Letterman Racing Aston Martin DB9, went faster in the afternoon, but wound up third, with a 1:26.396 (105.838 mph).
Michael McCann, of Canton, Ohio, was fourth fastest in the afternoon with a time of 1:26.498 (105.713 mph) in his No. 16 Remington Shaving and Grooming Cadillac CTS-V. Ritch Marziale, of Tempe Ariz., was just 0.019-second back in his No. 56 All-Cut Concrete Cutting Dodge Viper.
Andy Pilgrim (Cadillac CTS-V), Jason Daskalos (Dodge Viper), Dino Crescentini (Porsche 911 GT3), Eric Curran (Chevrolet Corvette) and Sonny Whelen (Chevrolet Corvette) completed the top 10 on the day. Daskalos and Curran were the only two drivers in the top 10 that stood on their morning practice times for the day.
Qualifying for Friday afternoon's Road Atlanta SCCA SPEED GT Finale Presented by Foametix is set to take the green flag Thursday at 1:35 p.m. (EDT). Live timing and notes area available at www.world-challenge.com.
