BRASELTON, Ga. (October 9, 2002) - Local resident Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., and Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., paced the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT practice in preparation for Friday's Round Nine of the 2002 Championship at the Audi Presents Petit Le Mans Road Atlanta week.
Driving the No. 22 1st Interstate Inn/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Pobst paced practice for the fourth-straight event in search of his record-tying fourth-consecutive victory. His lap of 1:32.027 (99.362 mph) in the afternoon session bettered his morning time, and was nearly two seconds under the 2001 qualifying record of 1:33.918 set by Peter Cunningham. Cunningham was second-quick in his RealTime Racing Acura NSX SC, with a lap of 1:32.366 (98.997 mph).
"This team is great," said Pobst. "I show up and the cars are all shiny, prepared and ready. Our advantage is not what it was at the last race due to the weight the series has added to the car, but we also continue to develop.
"Right now, I'm dealing with a car that has acquired a whole new personality. We have to guess at what it wants. Today's oversteer was very different from yesterday's understeer, and we didn't change much. The track conditions are different, but we're a little confused with how much the car has changed. There's more there, and I'll need it [in qualifying] tomorrow."
Cunningham's fast time was turned in the morning session, which proved to be the faster of the two for most drivers. Rookie Paul Edwards, of Santa Barbara, Calif., celebrated his recent Red Bull Driver Search nomination by setting the third fastest time in only his second appearance in his Champion Racing Audi S4 Competition. Johannes van Overbeek (Porsche) and Phil McClure (Chevrolet Corvette ZO6) completed the top five. In all, nine drivers ran faster than the 2001 qualifying mark.
Woody's Ice Qualifying for Friday's race is set for Thursday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. (Eastern).
