Fitzgerald, Altenburg Pace SCCA Speed WC Practice At Atlanta
BRASELTON, Ga., (June 27, 2003) -- Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., paced practice for the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT and Touring Car Championships, respectively, at the Road Atlanta Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta.
Driving the No. 22 1st Interstate Inn/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Fitzgerald turned a blistering lap of 1:29.155, (102.563 mph) in the first of two sessions to top teammate Phil McClure's Aggregate Industries/3R Racing Chevrolet Corvette ZO6.
"We had a really good test day yesterday, and our times today proved what a great team this is," said Fitzgerald. "This is also a good track for the Porsche, whereas Lime Rock Park and Infineon Raceway are good tracks for the BMWs. There wasn't much grip in the track this afternoon, and if conditions are right, I think the pole position time for tomorrow will be in the 1:28s."
McClure was nearly a second off Fitzgerald's time, with a lap of 1:29.995, (101.605 mph). Point leader Randy Pobst, (Audi RS 6), Bill Auberlen, (BMW M3) and Hans Stuck, (BMW M3) completed the top five.
In Speed Touring Car practice, it was all TriPoint Motorsports, with Altenburg topping teammate Shauna Marinus with a fast lap of 1:39.546, (91.857 mph). Driving the No. 40 TriPoint/Mazdaspeed Mazda Prot0x00e9g0x00e9 ES, Altenburg set his fast lap in the first session and nearly matched it in the second.
"Our basic setup out of the truck is good at Road Atlanta," said Altenburg. "I don't think we're more hooked up than usual, but the other cars seem to be less hooked up. I almost feel slow through the turns, but we're killing the other cars."
Marinus' fast lap came in the second session, when she turned a 1:39.782, (91.639 mph) in her second lap.
Chuck Hemmingson made it a Mazda top-three sweep, followed by point leader Pierre Kleinubing, (Acura RSX-S) and Bill Auberlen, (BMW 325i).
Qualifying for this weekend's race is set for Saturday at 10:10 a.m., (Eastern). The SCCA Speed GT race will make their standing start Saturday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. The SCCA Speed Touring Car race is set for Sunday morning.
