Saini Fastest in Opening Road America SPEED TC Practice
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 8, 2008) -- Rookie Jason Saini, of Fort Worth, Texas, was fastest in Friday's opening practice for this weekend's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Round Eight race, part of the Road Race Showcase at Road America. Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., and James Clay, of Blacksburg, Va., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 74 Mazdaspeed/Stoptech/Racinghart MAZDA6, Saini turned a fastest time of 2:28.039 (98.439 mph) in his first lap around the 4.048-mile circuit.
"It feels great to be fastest, Saini said. "I've only been in Miatas and MX-5s around this place and in some places it's pretty easy to go flat-out, but in the MAZDA6, you have to work a bit harder. It's an awesome track, an awesome area and it's going to be great weather this weekend. Hopefully a bunch of fans will come out and it'll be a good one.
"I lived in Chicago for eight years, so this is kind of a home track for me. I know there's another team [RealTime Racing] based nearby, but Mazda and Tri-Point have been working really hard. We've had a bit of a down year, compared to last year, but the last couple of races this year we want to show that we're still a contender and the ones to beat. Next year we're going to be strong.
Defending race winner Herr drove his No. 97 Mazdaspeed/Tindol Motorsports MAZDA6 to a fastest time of 2:28.183 (98.343 mph), also in his first flying lap.
Clay put BMW in the top three with a fastest time of 2:28.308 (98.260 mph) in his No. 36 BimmerWorld BMW 325i. Milwaukee's Peter Cunningham was fourth in his No. 42 Acura/RealTime/Eibach/Red Line Acura TSX, turning a fast time of 2:28.349 (98.233 mph), followed by teammate Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, Fla., who ran a 2:28.608 (98.062 mph) in his No. 43 Acura/RealTime/Eibach/Red Line Acura TSX.
Dino Crescentini (Acura TSX), point leader Kuno Wittmer (Acura TSX), Michael Galati (MAZDA6), Jim Daniels (MAZDA6) and James Sofronas (BMW 325Ci) completed the top 10.
The final practice session for Sunday's Round Eight race will take place at 5:05 p.m. (CST). Follow live session and lap notes via the SCCA Pit Board at www.world-challenge.com.
