Auberlen Fastest in SCCA SPEED Touring Car Practive at Road America
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 20, 2004) -- SCCA SPEED Touring Car point leader Bill Auberlen, of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., was quickest following both practice sessions on Friday at Road America, in preparation for Sunday's Round Eight race. Brazilian Pierre Kleinubing was second fastest, while Bob Stretch, of Dallas, was third.
Auberlen, driving the No. 1 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i, set his fast lap of 2:28.375 (98.216 mph) under cool track conditions in the morning practice session.
"It was a good run," Auberlen said. "We made some radical changes [last night] and found some things out, which made the car good this morning. I can't go any faster than that. If I put everything back together perfectly, maybe I could get there.
"The Nissan is strong," Auberlen added. "P.D. (Peter Cunningham, of West Bend, Wis., was sixth fastest today) was behind me and I was watching him the whole way down the straightaway. He was 12 cars lengths behind [me] and the last one third [of the straightaway] he made up the whole gap. He just came up on me, hit the brakes and went back again. He was just showing me that he has something in the bag."
Auberlen's lap is more than four seconds faster than the qualifying lap record of 2:32.737 (95.411 mph) set by Cunningham in 2003. Auberlen also holds the fast race lap record at the 4.048-mile circuit with a 2:33.933 (94.632 mph).
Three-time series Champion Kleinubing turned the second fastest lap of the day with a 2:28.669 (98.021 mph) in his No. 42 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX. In 76 career World Challenge starts, which include 20 wins, Kleinubing has never won at Road America. But, with turning the second quickest time, he looks poised to capture his first win at his team's (RealTime Racing, of Saulkville, Wis.) home track.
Piloting the neon green and orange No. 98 Wheels America BMW 325 Ci, Stretch recorded the third fastest lap with a 2:28.702 (98.000 mph), and led the warmer afternoon session.
Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., and Matt Plumb, of Newport, R.I., were fourth and fifth quickest, respectively.
SPEED Touring Car qualifying is set for 10:30 a.m. (CDT) Saturday, Aug. 21. The SPEED Touring Car Round Eigth race will make its standing start at 11:10 a.m. (CDT) Sunday, Aug. 21. Sunday's race will air at 12:00 p.m. (CDT), Sunday Aug. 21.
