3R-Racing Qualifies Fourth, Ninth and Fourteenth at Road America
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin -- 3R-Racing drivers Phil McClure, Tommy Archer and Tim Wiens qualified in fourth, ninth and fourteenth respectively this morning for round eight of the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT series race to be run this afternoon at Road America.
On the first lap of the session at the exit of turn 14, Archer beached his number 22/c3controls/ Whelen Engineering/3R Viper causing a red flag for the session. "I tried to get up on the bumper of the Cadillac and get a draft down the front stretch when it just got away from me. I thought I could ride it through the sand, but didn't quite make it. I am glad that the SCCA was able to get an additional five-minute of qualifying time so I could at least get one flying lap. Really ninth place was pretty fair for where we have practiced all week." Archer's qualifying time was a 2:17.286 and he will start from the fifth row.
Phil McClure, piloting the number 73/Aggregate Industries/3R Corvette, qualified in fourth with a time of 2:16.511 and a speed of 107 mph to start today's race. "It is pretty tough when you qualify fourth and are almost two seconds off of pole. I made a small mistake in turn one that probably cost me a couple of tenths, but not enough to really change the order. We have a good car here; it really handles well in the fast stuff. I will have to focus on keeping the Audis in sight and the Porsches behind me."
Tim Wiens, driving the number 33/1st Interstate Inns/3R Viper, qualified in fourteenth with a time of 2:17.992. "This is a typical starting spot for me the last couple of races. It was hard to get a rhythm with the red flags and only two hot laps. There was also a lot of gravel on the track. I have a pretty good handling car; we will make a few small changes for the race as it will probably be a little warmer this afternoon and just race hard from the seventh row."
Archer leads the GT driver's standings with 174 points, two points ahead of second place. 3R teammates Phil McClure and Tim Wiens are also in the top ten in GT points with McClure in sixth with 122 and Wiens in tenth with 97.
Road America is the longest track on the schedule with its 12-turns and slightly over four miles in length. The track rewards horsepower and an aerodynamic shape. The Archer Viper is carrying 255 lbs. in REWARDS (Rewarding of Equalizing Weight Assigned to Reduce Driver Sensitivity) weight and the McCLure Corvette has a 20% restrictor, both affecting the overall performance of the racers.
The race will be run on August 21st and televised on Speed Channel August 29th at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time.
